Snyder Park Gardens & Arboretum

In 2015, The Ohio State University Extension and the Master Gardener Volunteers of Clark County started working on a landscape design master plan for the relocation of their demonstration, teaching and display gardens that were previously located at the Gateway Boulevard. A portion of the former Snyder Park Golf Course just beyond the clubhouse will become known as the Snyder Park Gardens and Arboretum. During the master planning process, focus group and public meetings were held to ensure that the many needs and interests of the community were included.

The first signs of development in the area began as the groups planted their field trial research plot at a temporary location within the park. This research plot was well received and brought them great feedback from the community. 2015 also brought the creation of the Victory Garden, which produced 7,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables which were donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

With the completion of the master plan, develop of the gardens will begin in phases. Groundbreaking for Phase I will begin this summer and will include; research plots and perennial displays, the Early Ohio Settlers Garden, the regional Ohio State University turf research plot, as well as, site preparation for the Garden of Eatin’ and improvements to the Victory Garden. Future phases will include a contemplative garden, perennial trials, tree and shrub collections, an outdoor education area, a tower to view the entire site, and much more. All of the garden areas will be installed focusing on sustainable gardening practices and will be used to teach others how to be successful in their own gardens.

In addition, OSUE and the Master Gardeners are partnering with Hollandia Gardens Association in the development of the overall gardens. The Hollandia Gardens Association will be fundraising and designing areas that will include a maze and a children’s garden. The groups will also be partnering to create an accessible garden in the future outdoor kitchen area. 2016 will be an exciting year at the Snyder Park Gardens and Arboretum, we hope you will visit and watch as the area develops into a great community destination.
